Is there such a thing as a post-travel depression? Or a depression you get after having an epic experience and come back to real life and not know what to do with your life? I’ve fully hit reverse culture shock. Put me back in the Bahamas please.
Adults always asked us what we wanted to be when we grew up. I never had the answer for that question. I just knew what I loved to do: travel, adventure, and be near the ocean. It wasn’t until I visited Hawaii in 2014, that really put me on the path to my passion. It started a ripple effect to towards my passion and where I am today.
It has been a hot minute since I have updated my website and written to you. So much has happened since I last wrote and I am here to update you on the salty business.
Living in the Caribbean with clear, blue water and waves for days, I knew it was only a matter of time before getting into surf photography. Rolling mountains underneath the surface have always mesmerized me. As an underwater photographer, I want to challenge myself to push my limits and learn new things in a different environment.
Here in Puerto Rico, boredom has officially settled in. It’s day 9 (I think) of quarantine life. Only essential businesses are open. So, that leaves most of us locked down. If you are as bored as we are, here are some documentaries and movies you can check out.
Proud doesn’t even describe how I feel about our community in Rincon, PR. On February 9th, we made Domes Beach a cleaner place. With over 64 volunteers, we collected more than 65 bags of trash, including micro-plastics and larger items, such as couches, tires, and air conditioning units.
Growing up, I watched Blue Crush almost every day. It was my dream to live that lifestyle; to live in a small shack near the beach and surf/dive everyday. On October 8th, 2019, I booked a one way ticket to Rincon, Puerto Rico and learned some things about living off the mainland.
7 days sailing from Nassau to the Exumas in the Bahamas. Diving, exploring, drinking, and almost running aground.
As many of you have seen, the Abaco islands in the Bahamas were completely obliterated by Hurricane Dorian. Learn how you can help the Bahamas!
It’s an escape for me. Somewhere I can escape all the noise, judgements, responsibilities, and tragedies of the world. Somewhere that is completely peaceful. Never any bad times. This is my sanity.
Can you imagine sitting on the beach with more than half a ton of garbage, including medical waste, needles, and IV bags, scattered right next to you? More than 6 very large truckloads in one small area of an Añasco beach was collected on March 9th.
What part of the island should I stay at? Where should I rent a house/apartment? Should I rent a car? What is there to do? Nightlife?
I have received SOO many messages about Puerto Rico and this is the best way to inform you about my favorite places and things to do.
Hello humans and land dwellers. My name is Halle Piacente and I am The Salty Mermaid. I prefer to spend my days in warm, tropical, salty water while being kissed by the sun.
In the gripping depths of our 120 ft scuba dive, my focus shifted from spearing a fish to a life-or-death rescue. Derek, in the midst of a full blown panic attack, signaled his desperate need for air. Adrenaline surged through my body and I immediately went into fight or flight mode; dropping all of my spearing gear, securing my alternate air source, and took command of the situation, guiding Derek back from the brink of death.
